The family of ducks naps in the cool water.
The Fence was installed to protect the site during the search and rescue operation. Almost immediately, people began leaving tokens of love and hope on the fence. The fence was moved to its current site, west of the Memorial, by family members, survivors and rescue workers at the time of the ground breaking for the Memorial.
Over 60,000 items have been collected and are preserved in the museum archives. Many of the items are used for educational purposes. More than 200 feet of the original fence gives people the opportunity to leave tokens of rememberance and hope.
